Generally, the major product is determined by stability. The more stable a product is, the more amounts it is produced in. Sometimes, major product is determined by the most stable intermmediate. A product with more stable intermmediate is produced in more quantity.

It solely depends on Reaction mechanism (elimination/substitution/free radical) via which major product is determined. There are even rules like Markovnikoff/Zaitsev which help in predicting major product.
