Well astronomy is an nocturnal subject meaning, when common people are into their deep dreams astrophysicists are busy in undiscovering the lesser known facts of celestial bodies and the universe. Moreover you should understand one thing that astronomy is an Research Orientation Field which requires lots of patience, die hard attitude towards science.

Also in the past few decades people entering into Basic Science (Core - Phy,Chem,Maths, etc) are next to endangered species . Since most of the people do want a luxurious lifestyle, handsome salaries and what not so they tend to enter into technical field so called as “ENGINEERING”.Astronomy being an extended science of physics offers a great as well as challenging career for thoose who have deep interest & real zeal of Science and Research.


Now coming to the question, of becoming an astrophysicist you should have a deep interest in Physics and Mathematics at your 10+2 .

After that take up a Bsc -physics course at any of the good institutes like St stephans , st Xavier's (kolkata),etc since astronomy is an extended branch of physics and thus no institute in India offers a direct UG course in astronomy (OR more preferably get into prestigious institutes like IISER and take up 5 -year dual degree course in physics.)

The next thing you need to do after completing your BSc. -Phy is to give entrance exams like jest and iit- jam and get into institutes like TIFR and IIT’ s for your MSc physics /MSc astronomy course.(any course would do)

After that the real process begins ,people from iiser as well as others who have completed their msc have to apply for a PHD course in Astronomy. Notable institutes are IUCAA ,IIA,TIFR,etc.

And then after completion of your PHD program,research papers and years of hardwork makes all your dreams come true.
