sieving separates different sized solids using a sieve to let smaller particles through while retaining larger ones, for example- like flour from sand whereas

filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid or gas using a porous medium that traps fine particles allowing the fluid to pass, for example- like tea leaves from water

Hello Arohi. Both the techniques of Seiving as well as Filtration are completely different. Seiving is seperating a mixture based upon its particle size. Like for example there are stones of different sizes but all are stones. Seiving lets the smaller stone get through the seive or mesh while as the bigger stones stay above the seive. Its just an example don't take reference. While as if we talk about filtration it means seperation of solid from a liquid because of insolubility of a solid in a liquid. We use a filtration paper for this. The liquid passes through the filter paper while as the solid remains as a residue. For example we take a mixture of salt+water+pebbles, the water plus salt solution will pass through the paper because salt is soluble in water while as the pebbles will stay as a residue because pebbles are not soluble in water.

I hope i was able to clear you doubt. Happy learning!

Hello,

Sieving and filtration are both separation methods, but they differ in purpose and application.

Sieving is used to separate solid particles of different sizes. A sieve allows smaller particles to pass through while larger particles are retained. It is commonly used for separating sand and gravel or flour and bran.

Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid. The liquid passes through the filter paper as filtrate, while the solid remains as residue. It is commonly used to separate sand from water.

Key difference: Sieving separates solid–solid mixtures based on size, whereas filtration separates solid–liquid mixtures based on insolubility.

Sieving and filtration are two different methods of separation

Sieving is used to separate particles of different sizes in a mixture of solids. A sieve or mesh is used. Particles smaller than the holes pass through while larger particles stay on top. Example separating sand from gravel

Filtration is used to separate a solid from a liquid in a suspension. Filter paper cloth or other porous material is used. The liquid passes through while the solid is retained. Example separating sand from water

Key point

Sieving separates solids based on particle size

Filtration separates solids from liquids based on retention
