The amount of marks that you will get shall determine your JEE Mains rank( with respect to the performance of other candidates). Higher the marks, better the rank.
The number of marks you are targeting or looking forward to achieve shall depend your preferred college cutoff rank. If you want to join a good college of your state, you need to score atleast more than its cut off marks.
Every College has its own cutoff rank. The government engineering Institutes have a very low cutoff ranks( as lower the JEE Mains rank, better chances of you getting a better government engineering college).

The top NITs of the country provide admission to students who have secured a maximum rank less than 20000. The new and super new NITs provide admission to students who have secured a maximum rank less than 50000. Furthermore, the low ranked NITs like the North East NITs provide admission to students with a maximum rank less than 1,25,000. The rank that a candidate secures also depends on the percentile that he has achieved.
To be in the top 10,000 ranked candidates, you need to get a JEE Mains percentile greater than 99.
