There is no restriction on the number of gate attempts one can enroll and appear for the exam as many times as they want.

Yes you can start your gate prepation from 1st yr of you graduation. In order to start make sure to look the syllabus of your branch. Try to clear your basics and fundamentals strong.

In gate exam, there is no upper limit of maximum attempts. You can give as many times as you want.
There is no limit on number of attempts for eligibility in GATE exam.

Now, as you have gone in first year, then you can attempt your first gate exam from 3rd year.
As per the rules, from this year candidates from 3rd year who want to give gate from 3rd year can also give. Also there is no age limit for gate exam.
