See Java is a coding language that will help you in your life throughout whether you do nanoelectronics or not. Since you are in first year, I would suggest you to do the java course, importantly core java and be very thorough with its basics. Nanoelectronics uses coding in MATLAB, but the numerical modelling is written in Java. So if you want an overall knowledge of the subject it will be a good option.

Best of luck!
