You should startcoaching only when you feel you actually require them. All you need is to study conceptually and have in-depth knowledge of whatever you study. You can start preparing from 2nd year. You need to know the syllabus and more importantly the subjects. There's many institutes which give classes on GATE exam. You an join there.
