You may join classes if you think you are not confident enought to give the exam. Several Coachings like MadeEasy and ACE Academy can provide you with the study material but you have to study on your own. What they do is that they give you the study material which is only required for GATE since if you study from a book you might waste your time by reading other things.

If you think you can perform better through a coaching then you should join classes.

Else you should prepare short notes of the topics in GATE syllabus.

According to your query you are talking about the preparation tips and confused about joining Coaching class or not. Firstly, GATE is the exam which has syllabus mostly covered in your undergraduate course. Students must have passed graduation in engineering/technology or Masters degree in any relevant science subject to be eligible for GATE. There is no age limit for GATE. Basically the syllabus you will be preparing for GATE , for example say it 100 percent, most of it you will be knowing in your Engineering (around 75 Percent).
In my opinion there is no need to take Coaching for GATE. GATE is very straight forward exam and to get into IIT/IISc is easy if you manage your time. You can crack gate exam in only one to two  months of serious preparation without any coaching, But only when you have Best Strategies to crack GATE Exam.
