Assuming it is 42 marks in GATE then according to 2020 statistics, GATE (EE) cutoff was 33.4 marks, and accordingly the rank may lie between 5000-10000. That may not get you top NIT's but you should keep a check on new NIT's like NIT, Silchar, Agartala, Raipur nor you would definitely get into private and state colleges like Anna University, Delhi Technical University, VJTI Mumbai.
You may also try giving GATE next year as it's score can be considered for 3 years.
