Admission to NITs including IITs, IIITs & GFTIs is only merit-based.  T he great news for this year is that the mandatory criteria of 75% in school XII boards has been relaxed thanks to the continued pandemic.
The only requirement is that a candidate must be passed in his/her class XII(% scores won't be a problem this year). Accordingly, if a student appears for any compartment exam and clears it then he/she is eligible for the admission to NITs also(as is asked within the question). It shouldn't be a problem at the reporting centres(RCs).
