Different university has different exam pattern based on their curriculum like some colleges have semester system while a few other have yearly exam pattern.
So it totally depends on which system your college follows.
If they follow yearly pattern then you will have Midterms at around October and finals in July,
and if they follow semester system then you will have exams at the end of the semester, i.e. twice a year, once in December and once in June

Generally, masters courses are offered semester wise and the students are required to appear for the exam after the end of each semester so you must have appeared for semester end exam last December as you took admission in July.
