First, make sure the university or college where you want to study offers a PhD in English. You can check the official website or contact their English department.

Second, most colleges require you to appear for a PhD entrance exam. Some universities conduct their own exam, and others accept national-level exams like UGC NET. If you have already cleared UGC NET (especially with JRF), you may not need to take the entrance test.

Third, if you qualify in the exam, you will be called for an interview. In the interview, you may be asked about your research interest, academic background, and why you want to do a PhD.

Fourth, you will need to submit a research proposal. This is a short document explaining what topic you want to study during your PhD, why it is important, and how you will study it.

Once you clear all these steps, you will be offered admission and can begin your PhD.
