This is really a topic which should be explained clearly and sftudents should be aware about counselling procedure.

So I am going to describe counselling procedure of JEE mains below-

1.)After getting your ranklist, you have to first register on the website of JoSAA to sit in counselling.

2.)After registering you will be given given login ID. Now you can fill your choice of colleges in a descending order of your peferred branches and colleges. You can lock your choices once you are satisfied with your choice filling. If you will not lock your choices within given date, choices will be automatically locked.

3.)After locking choices you will go through many rounds of counselling generally five. And you will be alloted college and branch according to your choice filling.

4.)In every round you have to select one choice out of three - Float, Freeze or Slide.

5.)Float - means you want to go in the next round and you are not satisfied with the college you got. or you want to get a better college according to your choice in the next round.

6.)Slide - means you are satisfied with the alotted college but want to continue counselling to get a better branch according to your choice. or you want to get the same college with better branch.

7.)Freeze - means you are completely satisfied with the college and branch you have been alotted. And you do not want to sit for counselling in the next round.

8.)If you will not alotted college in a round, your choice will automatically become Float. And you will go to next round.

9.)If you are alotted a college for the first time in any round, then you have to go to reporting centres to opt and give your choices among Freeze, Float or Slide. And you have to submit corresponding documents there given on the website of JoSAA as well as pay some counselling fee (Around 45000 rupees), which will be adjusted in college fees once you get a college in counselling and FREEZE (I've explained below) it.

10.)Your choices will automatically Freeze in the last round.

11.)Afterthe last round, you can contact the alotted college to report there and take admission.
