Geology is a fantastically interesting and varied  subject to study but it can be difficult to earn a living as a professional geologist.  
 
Most geologists are involved in resource development such as oil and minerals.  Those businesses are somewhat cyclic in nature and we have been in a serious down side of the cycle for some time without any indications of a turn-around in the near future.

There are good employment opportunities in governmental agencies, if you can start working for one of them you would do very well.

Specialties like environmental geology or engineering would be the best choices.
