in civil services prelims paper-2 you will be asked questions based on reading comprehension,critical analysis and decision making for which you need to have little english knowledge and decision making skills.this paper is just qualifying of nature.

coming to mains exam,you have compulsory 2 language papers-out of which one paper is english must and should.it is of matriculation or equivalent standard.

This paper is also of qualifying in nature.jus basic english knowledge is enough.UPSC says, the papers on Essay, General Studies and Optional Subject of only such candidates will be taken cognizance who attain 30% marks in Indian Language and 25% marks in English as minimum qualifying standards in these qualifying papers.

The pattern of questions would be broadly as follows:‐

(i) Comprehension of given passages

(ii) Precis Writing

(iii) Usage and Vocabulary

(iv) Short Essay.
