Hi chetra, when a diploid cell gives rise to haploid cell, meiosis occurs. There are two types of life cycles- diploid dominant and haploid dominant. The most common example of haploid dominant is fungi. In a haploid-dominant life cycle, the multicellular (or sometimes unicellular) haploid stage is the most obvious life stage and is often multicellular. In this type of life cycle, the single-celled zygote is the only diploid cell. Fungi and some algae have this type of life cycle. Meiosis in humans is a division process that takes us from a diploid cell—one with two sets of chromosomes—to haploid cells—ones with a single set of chromosomes. In humans, the haploid cells made in meiosis are sperm and eggs.
