the mark is absolutely valid. but in some cases it is not really considered.

if you have got more marks in improvement exam then your previous paper is valid, but you need not show that to any one. it becomes useless. but still valid.

but if your improvement exam mark is low than the original, then the original is considered and the improvement becomes useless.

so in your case, your previous mark sheet is valid, but useless.
