1. IIT Madras

• IIT Madras is a residential institute that occupies a 2.5km (617 acre) campus that was formerly part of the adjoiningGuindy National Park.
• The institute has nearly 550 faculty, 8,000 students and 1,250 administrative and supporting staff.
• Growing ever since it obtained its charter from theIndian Parliament in 1961, much of the campus is a protected forest, carved out of the Guindy National Park, home to large numbers ofchital(spotted deer),black buck,monkeys, and other rare wildlife.
• A natural lake, deepened in 1988 and 2003, drains most of its rainwater.

2. IIT Bombay

• IIT Bombay was founded in 1958.In 1961,         the Parliament decreed IITs asInstitutes of National Importance.
• A high-power committee of Government of India recommended in 1946 establishment of four higher institutes of technology to set the direction for the development of technical education in the country. Planning for the Institute at Mumbai began in 1957 and the first batch of 100 students was admitted in 1958.
• Since its establishment in Powai, the institute has physically expanded to include more than 584 major buildings with a combined area of more than 2.396 gross square feet (550 acres or 2.22km).
• IIT Bombay is known for its flagship 4 Year and 5 Year programmes for which the entry is through theJoint Entrance Examination  Advanced.
• It offers degrees such as:Bachelor of Technology, Four Year Bachelor of Science, Five Year Master of Science, and a few others.

3. IIT Delhi

• Established in 1961, was formally inaugurated August 1961 by Prof.Humayun Kabir, Minister of Scientific Research & Cultural Affairs.
• First admissions were made in 1961.The current campus has an area of 320 acres (or 1.3km) and is bounded by the Sri Aurobindo Marg on the east, theJawaharlal Nehru UniversityComplex on the west, theNational Council of Educational Research and Trainingon the south, and the New Ring Road on the north,and flanked byQutub Minarand the Hauz Khasmonuments.
• The Institute was later decreed inInstitutes of National Importanceunder the Institutes of Technology Amendment Act, 1963 and accorded the status of a full University with powers to decide its own academic policy, to conduct its own examinations, and to award its own degrees.
• The IIT Delhi also given the status of Institute of Eminence (IoE) which graded autonomy but full autonomy, leaving this institutes to make their own decisions.
• According to a government statement issued earlier, these IoEs will have greater autonomy in that they will be able to admit foreign students up to 30% of the admitted students and recruit foreign faculty up to 25% of the faculty strength.
