The college IITDM is a pretty good college, especially for the computer science department. Other branches are also good and placement is quite decent there as well. The institute is growing and also is its publicity. The speciality is the design based curriculum which has been implemented only by few colleges across India. To describe “design based” in short, it is the ability to develop products which are more efficient in terms of use, cost, etc.

Academics and Faculty: The campus has a high-end infrastructure with well-equipped labs, spacious classrooms, etc. The faculty here are knowledgeable and experienced. Most of them are PhD scholars from reputed IITs. Students are engaged with their assignments and projects after the classroom hours also( but not as imposed as junior college). The system followed here is continuous assessment. Regular guest lectures are held( at least one per week most of the times). Group work culture is predominant which is utmost important while in a job.

You’d actually find good lecturers in Mechanical Engg, some are theoretically splendid, some have impeccable amounts of practical knowledge, some are disciplined(no Non-Sense kind) & knowledgeable, some have knowledge but can’t seem to express it very well. Given the amount of history we have, I think we are good but it could’ve have been a lot better.

Placements: The placements are improving yearly and because of the design curriculum is attracting many reputed companies. A good student in pace can get a reasonable placement. If you look at the overall picture, the college is pretty decent and has a stronghold in the regional area. If you're targeting this college you should apply through Jee mains. The admission is purely based on merit score obtained after normalization marks in Jee mains.

Academics:

Pretty good. I cay say this straightforward (especially for Computer Engineering branch, though it’s true in general for other branches as well).

Why-

• Updated and revised curriculum
• Design oriented . What ‘design’ means in education varies from branch to branch. Thus, various courses teach different flavors of design though it’s common in first year.
• Latest Hardware and Lab facilities: Most of the labs have bought new equipment and thus they are insync with technologies currently used.
• Centralized Air-conditioned: All classes and labs. Though the infrastructure is in place, it is yet to start functioning (maybe soon).
• Dedicated Facility: While as students we always crib about faculties being bad or this or that but deep down we do understand how sincere and hardworking they are. Most of the faculties take their work seriously and plan their classes well. It will be rare that faculty is absent or doesn’t take class.
• Good peer Quality: While i do believe we have yet to reach a good standard but from past 2 years as strength increased, i personally feel the quality of students entering IIITDM is good and Diverse. Some are great in coding, studies, music , sports or organization or multi talented. Earlier the diversity was less (or less visible) due to small strength. But its not a problem. Having a good friend circles changes your life!! Thus, anyone having friends who all worked their a** to get into it will definitely be a great experience from career point.

Placement:

Placement at IIITDM Kancheepuram is ‘average’. What it means that most of get placed in range 5lpa to 10lpa. Few cross 10 lpa. These figure will DEFINITELY grow in coming years as we will have more students to be placed. Earlier we couldn’t invite some of the high paying companies due to less strength or all were placed before we could make a call. To inform you - IIITDM students have had company with 35lpa offer (though no one could clear the final round which i hope you all will change in coming years).

• Placement process is handled properly and we have a very good CRO ( corporate relations officer , sounds good isn’t? ) who takes care of most of the placement work from inviting companies to arrangement to every small details. This makes our life easier as Placement is supposed to be ‘Student Activity’.
• Regular placement meeting and progress tracking. Faculty in charges take good interest and higher authorities are supportive and interested to work for placement. Thus, i m sure thier efforts will materialise into very good placements with higher and higher packages.

To sum it up, it’s a great choice for people in and around Chennai , good choice for people far away.
