No it does not take 8 years to become a lawyer. There are 2 types of Law courses- 5 year Integrated course and 3 year LLB course.

It either takes you 5 years or 6 years to complete a Law course. If you choose a 5 year Integrated law course after 12th it will combine an Undergraduate degree with law and will take you 5 years total to complete it. 

If you choose to do 3 year LLB programme you need to possess an Undergraduate degree for admission in it first. The UG degree being a minimum of 3 years and Law degree of 3 years, it will take 6 years in total.
