You have not mentioned any paricular NIT so I will just inform you that placements vary hugely depending on which NIT you are from.

The best one (according to me) is NIT Trichy. Here the average salary is around 10 lakh per annum and The highest package every year goes around 30lpa (as far as I have heard).  The highest this year was 5600000 (56lpa) in MCA and 95% students were placed.
