Hello,
The most common complications are:
Hypothyroidism as the thyroid tissue is permanently destroyed. Such patients may have to take thyroid supplements for the rest of their life.
Neck swelling and pain in the neck
As such radioactive iodine must not be used in children and pregnant women as in children radiation can cause other cancers and in pregnant women radiation may affect the fetus.
Radioactive iodine is mostly safe and is used when thyroid surgery is contraindicated.
Hope this helps.
