I will suggest your friend to drop a year and prepare hard for board exams as well as other entrance exams

Dear

Most of the university won't count compartment cases.Its better he need to clear the subject and obtained good marks . And apply for next year in good colleges.

In next one year You can do foreign language as to utilise the time.
