only the Candidates who  shortlisted after the prilims will be invited to appear for the DAT main exams.DAT will be conducted at various test centers across india,it consists of examination for three hours and will be marks out of 100 this is pen-paper based,question paper is in english,no negative marking,based on DAT prilims score seperate merit list shall be prepared for each category,shortlisted canmdidates only will be eligible to appear fot DAT mains exam.

NID DAT main is only for the ones who get selected after the prelim. The competition to get a seat in NID is fierce and needs crazy will power and dedication. While I motivate you to do all that, I'd suggest you to keep yourself open to other innovative design programmes offered in India as well.

Here, I'd recommend two institutes.

-Claiming to be the first Design University of India, Anant National University offers B.Des in Interior, Space, Interaction, Product and Communication Design. Know more about the course at www.anu.edu.in

-JK Lakshmipat University, the corporate university of the 125-year-old JK Organisation, offers B.Des programmes in Product, Interaction and interdisciplinary design. Know more about the courses at www.jklu.edu.in

I would especially recommend the B.Des programme in interdisciplinary design if you are uncertain about your calling in design since it provides you with a holistic flavour of design as a concept, rather than just concentrating in one aspect of it. National Institute of Design conducts Design Aptitude test (DAT) for admission to the undergraduate design programmes. 
Admission process of NID DAT is a 2 stage process-

NID DAT Aptitude Test Prelims and Mains
NID DAT Mains is the final stage of DAT. Candidates shortlisted after the first stage will have to appear for mains at one of the NID’s campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru or Gandhinagar.
