The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme, a Central Sector initiative, was introduced in 2008 with the goal of providing scholarships to deserving students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in order to prevent their class VIII dropout and to motivate them to pursue secondary school. It is proposed to provide 100,000 scholarships under this scheme to gifted or meritorious kids whose parents make no more than  3,50,000/-a year from all sources at the time the recipients are chosen.
