You are in the 3rd year of your civil engineering course, it means that it is the best time to start preparing for the competitive exams you can sit for.

If you wish to enhance your knowledge in technical aspects of construction, go for M.Tech. In India for premier institutes like IISc or IITs, you need to appear for GATE and you should aim for rank below 1000. Civil engineers have a variety of choices for their specialization, depending on your interest and score in the entrance exam, you can make your choice.

You have several options like -

1. M.Tech - Structural Engineering,

2. M.Tech - Geotechnical Engineering

3. M.Tech - Water Resource Engineering

4. M.Tech - Transportation Engineering 

5. M.Tech - Building Technology and Construction Management

6. M.Tech - Infrastructure Engineering and Construction Management

Select a stream according to your interest and also as per your future planning, what you want to do in the future.

For Jobs point of View in MNCs like L & T, KEC International, Atkins, you can work as a design engineer and planning /QA-QC engineer if you do your masters in Structural engineering from IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur as these MNCs visit there for placement.

If you wish to earn a satisfying pay then construction management is amongst the best options as it can be an easy track to reach the Project Manager post after that.

Other than M.Tech, you can apply for MBA if you want to join for management related career line. You can apply for the same if you have scored 50% marks in B.Tech. CAT/MAT are some of the main entrance exams for this course. CAT is the most preferred exam for MBA studies with your engineering degree. If you are fortunate enough, you may get into some IIM. MBA after engineering is one of the booming career opportunities pursued by numerous graduates. You can opt for MBA in India through various examinations such as CAT, MAT, XAT, IBSAT, SNAP, etc.

If you wish to pursue your MBA degree from colleges abroad, you are required to appear for a standard test such as GMAT, followed by language test such as TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, etc.

You can also sit for exams like GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, etc to get a chance to do your MS from foreign universities.

Whatever you do be confident and believe in yourself. Devote at least 4 hours daily in preparation for whatever exam you wish to sit for and sit for the campus placements as well. The campus placements will help you prepare for interviews and hence improve your English speaking skills, which is expected these days regardless of what you seek for.

Civil engineering is called an evergreen branch of engineering due to the never-ending opportunities.
