Hello,

In glycolysis , a total of 4 ATP molecules are produced, but 2 ATP are used in the process. So, the net gain of ATP in glycolysis is 2 ATP per glucose molecule.

Hope it helps !

Hello! The breakdown of ATP production steps in glycolysis can be explained easily to understand.

ATP Formation in Glycolysis

Glycolysis utilizes cytoplasmic glucose (C6H12O6) to produce pyruvate which creates ATP as its source of energy.

Net ATP Production in Glycolysis:

  • 1. ATP Used:

Two molecules of ATP disappear during the first stages of this process known as investment.

  • 2. ATP Generated:

The payoff phase of glycolysis leads to the generation of 4 ATP molecules.

  • 3. Net ATP Gain:

The net ATP output equals 2 ATP due to 4 molecules of ATP produced while using 2 ATP molecules.

Additional Energy Yield:

Aerobically speaking two molecules of NADH are produced from glycolysis enabling more ATP generation through the electron transport chain.

Final Summary of Glycolysis Output:

  • Net ATP = 2 ATP

The aerobic respiration of two net generated NADH molecules leads to the production of around 5-6 molecules of ATP.

  • End Product = 2 Pyruvate molecules
