to get admission to institutions like NITs, IIITs, GFTIs JOSAA counselling is essential as you can get admission to these institutions only through JOSAA counselling. There is also another counselling called CSAB counselling, which is essentially  a second round of counselling that is conducted to fill up the vacant seats in the NITs and IIITs, this round is not considered for IITs. But apart from that there is state level counselling where you can apply to get admission to colleges in your respective state.
