MBA is offered by university colleges, while PGDM is offered by private autonomous institutions.

MBA is designed on university guidelines and is more focussed on various aspects of management, whereas PGDM focuses on developing industry-specific knowledge.

Placement scenario for both the courses is similar.

Taking into account the above facts, you should choose the course which you feel is more suitable to your needs and goals.

Alternatively, you can go for a Hybrid PGDM by Welingkar. Hybrid PGDM is a program ideal for working professionals who wish to learn as they earn.

It is called a Hybrid program because it is a combination of various online & offline activities to give the pursuers better understanding of the industry.

Hi,

The main reason why postgraduate courses are named as PGDM is because the institute granting it is not affiliated to any University.Although there are similarities between the curriculum of both, differences exist as well. A student pursuing MBA will be studying more of the theoretical aspects of management. An MBA institute will be following a fixed curriculum as it will be based on the university guidelines.A student pursuing a PGDM course will be gaining knowledge regarding building soft skills and the programme is more industry-oriented. An autonomous institute does not have to follow university standards, so it is free to change its curriculum according to industry standards. In the Indian context, there is not much of a difference in terms of placements. Besides the Top B-schools offer PGDM and not MBA. It is better to check the institute as a whole.

Hi Sandeep,

The following points will help you in making your choice-

  • MBA stands for Master in Business Administartion and PGDM stands for Post Graduation Diploma in Management.
  • MBA is a degree course offered by colleges affiliated to universities and PGDM is a diploma course offered by institutes which are not affiliated to any universities and are autonomous.
  • PGDM is industry oriented where as MBA is exam oriented.
  • PGDM has high fees as compared to MBA.
  • MBA focuses on theorotical knowledge and PGDM focuses on practical knowlegde.

As per my opinion, PGDM is always better than MBA. You can make your choice.

All the best!!
