Hello there,

Phosphorus is known to form two types of halides that are of type PX 3 and PX 5 . Of all the phosphorus halides formed, most common are phosphorus pentachloride, PCl 5 and phosphorus trichloride, PCl 3 .

Some basic equations of these halides are listed below.

PCl 3 + 3H 2 O → H 3 PO 3 + 3HCl

PCl 5 + H 2 O→POCl 3 + 2HCl

3C 2 H 5 OH + PCl 3 → 3C 2 H 5 Cl + H 3 PO 3
