Hi there!
Greetings!
Hope you are having a nice day!
‘Work’ is defined as ‘force x distance moved (in the direction of the force). Energy is defined such that whenever object A does work on object B, then an amount of energy, ΔE, is transferred from A to B, which is equal to the work done.
So, WD = F x d, and Δ E = WD.
These formulae apply to all energy transfers, and in the case of objects in a uniform gravitational field, g, the WD = F x d = mg x h. When this work is done on an object, which only raises it up, away from the earth, but gives it no KE, then the energy transferred to it can only be GPE. So, therefore; ΔGPE = mgh, where Δ means ‘a finite change in’. This formula always applies in a uniform gravitational field.
Thanks.
