Hi

Petroleum engineering is a decent branch in itself, however many students in petroleum engineering go for non core jobs, i.e. in the IT sector (through coding) or in finance/consultation companies. This is because of the low packages offered in former as compared to non core fields. The job opportunities are lower than mainstream engineering branches, however not non existent. In fact, with lesser people interested in core, the job market is gradually widening.
