Hi Mahesh,

B schools give a lot of importance to diverse profiles nowadays. The selection process for most B schools contain separate scores for your educational background. Since MBA is mostly dominated by engineers, any profile other than engineering always has an added advantage in MBA. Your profile will definitely stand out among your peers because of your background in travel and tourism.

The field that you would like to go into post completion of your MBA will not be affected by your background experience to a huge extent, but having a relevant work experience or education gives you an edge over others. MBA opens up diverse portfolios that you could go into, so you need not worry of having less opportunities in any sector you like.

Most B schools give a general management degree, but there are others which give specialized degrees as well. If you are specifically looking for a MBA degree in IT, below are few of the institutes and exams you can aim for:

  • Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune (SNAP)
  • IMT, Ghaziabad (CAT, XAT, GMAT)
  • SP Jain Institute of Management (CAT,XAT)

Good luck and prepare well!

Best wishes,

Anjali

Hello Mahesh,

Yes, you can , provided thath you fulfil the minimum criteria  of having 45-50% in graduation. Most of the top-notch B-schools specially IIM's offer degree in General management. It's upto you which subjects you choose in second year. Nowadays, industries value diversity alot and if you have domain knowledge from different fields it would be beneficial for you.

Apart from CAT you can give SNAP, CMAT, MAH-CET, MAT,GMAT

Definitely Mba is not just about streams its also about holistic development of an individual. So yes you can do it. It will not only help you to pursue your passion or interest but also groom you with the best industry practices for the same.

Diverse profiles are also appreciated in the industry so having 2 different specialisations would help to brighten up your future as well.

One more thing is, you need to perform well in entrance exams to get into good colleges for this field. Because at the end of the day after spending lakhs on MBa you deserve some Brand equity and Return on Investment.

Some good colleges for the field are-

JBIMS

KJ Somaiya

SCIT

SICS

BIM

IMT Ghaziabad.

Do some research on these college's websites and the MIM, IT or ITBM courses they offer. Watch out for their Highest and Average packages available and their college life and future scope. Make an informed decision.

Also I would like to add that sometimes while you're pursuing the MBA course down the line you start developing interests in different other fields. So before going up for any college also findout if they offer such switches or minor subjects from other branches.

Work hard to get what you want and the world will provide.

All the best.

Diversity is something that the industry respects a lot, it is always a plus point when you have experience and knowledge of multiple fields. Simillar thing goes for management colleges as well. In addition to the generic requriements of appearing in the exams you may also neet to appear in specific college related examinaiton to be eligible for their candidacy. Few of the popular MBA (IT) course offering colleges are:
Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), Mumbai:
Master in Information Management (MIM)
Exams Accepted: CAT | MAT | XAT | MAH-CET | CMAT

KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research:
Masters in Information Management (MIM)
SET (Somaiya Entrance Test)

Symbiosis Centre for Information Technology:
MBA ITBM
Exam score accepted: SNAP

Balaji Institute of Modern Management: PGDM IT & Marketing
Exam scores accepted: CAT | MAT | XAT | CMAT | MAH-CET

Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad:
Post Graduate Diploma in Management
Exam scores accepted: CAT | XAT | GMAT

Hope this helps.
