The chemical substances used to inhibit the  growth or to kill  of  micro-organisms are called as Antimicrobial /Antibacterial agents.
These  agents are further subdivided into two groups on the basis of the action produced.
Bactericidal: The chemical substances agents used to kill the microorganisms are called as bactericidal agent.
Bacteriostatic: The chemical substances used to inhibit the growth of micro-organisms are called as bacteriostatic agents.

They are also subdivided on the basis of site of application
Antiseptic: These antimicrobial agents are applied on the living tissue like skin ,wound.
Disinfectant:
Disinfectants are the substances applied to non-living objects to destroy microorganisms living on them.
