This story written by Chugtai is a microcosm of the social construct we have built for ourselves where money holds the utmost importance. It starts off with a young Kallu working endlessly and tirelessly to make a buck or two, while the elders in the family especially Mumani Jan looked down upon him and treated him like a servant despite having kids who were the same age as him. The sharp contrast can be seen in the breakfast scene, where he cooks scrumptious nutritious meals for all the other kids who apparently have to eat it for the sake of health, while he looks on hungry and tired. His mother, is also a cook and albeit elder too, she cannot do anything to stop the others condeming her son or herself. The last straw was when Kallu was thrown out of the house, for harmlessly asking Salima bai (one of the daughters in the family) to marry him. A child's innocent words. Years later, they discover that he is now the deputy collector and is  a man of wealth, fame and looks . The family feels guilt . Not because they treated him poorly, but because of fear that he now held the Damocle's sword . The story ends with the family agreeing to marry Salima bai and Kallu . Quite a turn, and in true poetic justice for the same reasons he was welcomed back into the family he was initially thrown out of. Thus, this story proves the words "people's attitudes are dictated by money".
