Tooth decay, or cavities, typically begins when the pH level in the mouth drops below 5.5. This acidic environment allows bacteria to thrive, producing more acid that corrodes tooth enamel, leading to decay.

Normal pH:

A healthy mouth maintains a pH level of 6.2 to 7.6, which is slightly acidic to neutral.

Acidity and Decay:

When the pH drops below 5.5, the mouth becomes more acidic. This acidity is caused by bacteria breaking down sugars and food particles.

Enamel Erosion:

The acidic environment attacks the tooth enamel, a hard outer layer, causing it to erode. This process can lead to the formation of cavities.
