The Chinese Government has a test framework called the HSK, which separates the Chinese into six levels. HSK 1 needs knowledge of 150 words, HSK 2 is 300 words, HSK 3 is 600 words, HSK 4 is 1200 words, HSK 5 is 2500 words, HSK 6 is 5000 words.
