The excellent engineer is one, who have knowledge about other fields also. So, you should focus on core Mechanical Engineering, but along with this, you should be passionate to learn other good things.

Some tips to do good in Mechanical Engineering are:

Keep Learning: You should be updated with Technical journal available online
Good Communicator: You should be good at communication skills so as to handle a good job role in an organization
Work in all Environment: You can be handed over field work, so you must be adjustable to all circumstances
Team Player: You should be with team skills to reach high level in your career

Ultimately, you must do with heart whatever you do. Your main focus should be on learning practical things which turns you more employable.
