What do Indian MBA colleges look for in candidates?

Hi Aashita,

Management education has become very popular in the last few years after engineering. Management institutes in India look for the following aspects in the candidates:

1. Will and enthusiasm for Learning - Management education is a field which has no end to it. Everyday things around us change and the managers have to keep themselves updated with the happenings around them. Management education teaches you the tools to achieve this. Therefore, you should show very high enthusiasm and a strong will towards leaning.

2. Analytical and problem-solving skills  - In the business world, leaders need to understand multiple processes, identify the issues, analyze them and come up with the solutions which make the business better. You should have basic mathematical skills, should be able to think in a structured way, should be able to look at an issue from all the perspectives. You need to show these abilities through your answers in the MBA interview.

3. Interpersonal skills - You should be a good communicator. It doesn't mean you should be an expert in it. but you need to have the bare minimum threshold level of interpersonal skills which you will improve during MBA education.

4. Readiness to do anything - In the business world, you may face a situation where you will have to do the work at the ground level or there may be the case where you will be working in the top layer. In either case, you should be able to work and perform very well. You should be able to adapt to any situation. This is tested through indirect questions in an MBA interview.

5. Teamwork - You should be able to collaborate, cooperate with others while working in a team. The management education covers the major learnings in which you need to work with peers. In real business situation also, most of the jobs involve working in teams. Therefore, this skill becomes important in management education.


6. Clarity about yourself - This is the most important thing which is tested in a MBA interview. You should know the things which are directly related to you like the learnings in the previous education, about your hometown, family background and history, etc.

Hi Aashita, one of the main things which MBA colleges look into the candidates are, the real reason they want to do MBA. They look into candidates who have a strong passion and a solid goal by doing MBA, along with a good communication as well as aptitude and gk skills. They should be able to reciprocate the need for MBA as well as have good amount of patience, confidence and the best attitude to reach finishing MBA. They should also know how to present themselves like which things they should say and what they should not show out which makes colleges feel that person is suitable or deserving to obtain a seat.
