The term Solar System refers to the "family" of the Sun. The Sun is a star around which eight planets, among other celestial objects, revolve in orbits.

The Solar System is meant by the system of planet revolving around the Sun. In Solar system we have four terrestrial planet (planet with rocky surface) such as Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. We have four Jovian planets (Massive Jupiter like planet) such as  Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. We also have one dwarf planet Pluto.

So all this 9 planets are revolving around Sun and thus the system is called the Solar System.
