(1) assign hydrogen +1, oxygen -2, and fluorine +1 or (2) assign H +1, oxy- gen 0, and fluorine -1.

On the grounds that HOF is a powerful oxidizing agent, the conclusion reached in the Note is that (1) should be favored.
