Asteroid Mining

The hypothetical extraction of resources from asteroids and other small planets, including near-Earth objects, is known as asteroid mining.

The high expense of spaceflight, incorrect detection of asteroids suited for mining, and increased extraction issues are among the challenges. As a result, land mining is still the sole way to get raw minerals today.

Asteroid sample return research missions, such as the completed Hayabusa and Hayabusa2 and the in-progress OSIRIS-REx, provide data that could potentially permit a study of future asteroid mining, despite the fact that this was not their major goal.
