Hope you are doing great. It seems like you are asking about different kinds of editing.  Editing techniques include copy editing, line editing, substantive editing, mechanical editing, and developmental editing. While there may be some variety in terminology, there are five major sorts of edits that are conducted on text. In no particular order, they are:

  • Copy editing
  • Line editing
  • Developmental, substantive, or content editing
  • Structural editing
  • Mechanical editing

Each of these sorts of editing is an important component of the revision process and marks the transition to the final edition. There may be some overlap in what these stages of editing look for depending on the sort of document you are having edited, but for the most part, they are independent editing processes.
