An endothermic reaction is a reaction that absorbs heat from the surroundings, so the temperature around it drops. A common example is melting ice.

An exothermic reaction is a reaction that releases heat, making the surroundings warmer. Burning a candle or magnesium ribbon are simple examples for this. These reactions differ based on whether heat is taken in or given out during the process.
