The extraction of pure metal from its ore is called metallurgy. In order to extract the metal from ores several physical and chemical methods are used. The method used depends upon chemical properties and nature of the ore from which it is to be extracted.

Metallurgy helps in extraction of metals. 

There are mainly 3 types of metallurgical processes which can be classified as:-

• Pyrometallurgy :- Extraction is done using heat energy. Metals like Cu, Fe,Zn , Pb, Sn, Ni, Cr, Hg, etc which are are found in the nature in the form of oxides,  carbonates, sulphides are extracted by this process. 
• Hydrometallurgy :- Extraction of metals involving aqueous solution is know as hydrometallurgy. Silver, gold ,etc are extracted by this process. 
• Electrometallurgy :- Extraction of highly reactive metals such as Na, K, Ca, Mg, Al, etc. by carrying electrolysis of one of the suitable compound in fused or molten state.
