Dear Student,

The Partition of Bengal in 1947 , divided the British Indian province of Bengal based on the Radcliffe Line between the Dominion of India and the Dominion of Pakistan. The Hindu-majority West Bengal became a state of India, and the Muslim-majority East Bengal (now Bangladesh) became a province of Pakistan.

Consequences of the partition of Bengal  :-

  1. The partition of Bengal provoked people all over India. All sections of the Congress - the Moderates and the Radicals, as they may be called - were against it.
  2. Large public meetings and demonstrations were organized and novel methods of mass protest evolved.
  3. The struggle that developed came to be known as the Swadeshi movement, powerful in Bengal but with echoes elsewhere too - in deltaic Andhra for instance, it was known as the Vandematar.
