Rank is not the marks you got in the examination but it is the position of student in among all students who are appear for this examination.

For example, if you got 100 marks in any examination and you friend got 95 marks in the same examination then your friend ranks is lower than you.

Rank is decided on the basis of how many students are appear for examination and arrange their marks sequentially, after that rank is decided which student got 1st position or which student got last position and all other students lies between 1st rank and last rank.
