You should remember that both are not interchangeable and do not mean the same thing. No doubt IT and CSE have around 90 per cent similar prescribed courses but the approach is different. Both will take you to different career paths and you have to be very clear about your career goals while making a choice here. 

• In Computer Science you'll be learning how computers work. This could be anything from computer languages, software design, or hardware architecture. It's just you and the computer having a conversation.
• You'll learn many of the same skills in IT, but your goals will be different. Here you'll become the mediator between the machine and the end user. Think of yourself as a translator - you speak both computer and human speech. It becomes your job to facilitate conversation between two speakers who are often mutually unintelligible. You'll be learning skills like computer support, database and systems administration, and network architecture.

Main Difference

CSE: Computer science engineers are involved in many aspects of computing, from the design of individual microprocessors, personal computers and supercomputers to circuit designing and writing software that powers them.

IT: Information Technology deals with the use of computers and computer software to store, protect process, transmit and securely retrieve data. IT professionals perform a variety of tasks that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases.
