Medical definition of VNTR

: a tandem repeat from a single genetic locus in which the number of repeated which the number of repeated DNA segments varies from individual to individual and is used for identification purposes (as in DNA fingerprinting).

VNTRs, shorthand for variable numbers of tandem repeats or more flippantly for very nasty types of repeat. The finding of hundreds of VNTR loci distributed across all chromosomes exposes a richness of genetic diversity for anthropologists studying human evolutionary history.

VNTR were an important source of RFLP genetic markers used in linkage analysis of diploid genomes.
