GATE no. has been following because people have realized that end of the day it is only 5000, 6000 optimistic 10,000 jobs are available and It is not if you prepare  suddenly the world open up to you.

Secondly what are also happened earlier GATE was the gateway for the further study in engineering if you want to do M.tech from the top college in India then GATE was the exam you appeared.

GATE was supposed to career in the engineering field towards research, Academic etc. PSUs getting added additional thing, I think it is a welcome thing but unfortunately it is shifted focus completely from Masters in Engineering to jobs.

Now what kind of jobs are available just add to before GATE came into place Indian Oil Corporation, ONGC Etc. like the companies in India they would conduct their own recruitment Exam so GATE is the only way to substitute for that so earlier before GATE there were some 15 exams taken by different companies now GATE became a single entity.

So kind of job you get would be in running those plants if you get into Indian Oil Corporation after GATE there will be both options available, You will be into production & Refinery occasionally you might get  in marketing & another function also. So When PSUs are looking at students after GATE, They are looking at their management Cardar so you will be rise up the ladder within the engineering field, Occasionally you might go other area also but by logical you will be rise up with ladder & may be start heading the refineries 10 years, 15 years down the line or may be production plant so that's a broad role. Initially 3 to 5 years it would be hard core engineering & then as you go up the ladder the engineering quantity will come down  & technocrat will take up.
